Equitable access to computers/internet

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about our students’ access to computers / internet tools on an equal basis. Each year, this becomes more and more essential, as more teachers assign school work that requires computer / internet access. We don’t have any reliable statistics about how many students do not have internet-capable computers available outside school. My concern is that it may be higher than some off-the-cuff estimates have been.

Some possible ways to deal with this:

survey of students/parents re: internet-capable computer access outside school
ways to increase computer access for identified students at school
more hours available in library before/after school
more transportation for students before/after school
work with community to provide programs for computers in homes (thin clients?)
increase hours, computers at public library and satellites

So here’s a bit about hooking a 14-year old into internet learning. the things that make it significant, in my thinking, are:

patience, don’t push
find a way to relate to student’s personal interests
provide only as much help as the student asks for
patience, with confidence that in time they will come around
