Equitable access to computers/internet

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about our students’ access to computers / internet tools on an equal basis.  Each year, this becomes more and more essential, as more teachers assign school work that requires computer / internet access.  We don’t have any reliable statistics about how many students do not have internet-capable computers available outside school.  My concern is that it may be higher than some off-the-cuff estimates have been.

Some possible ways to deal with this:

  • survey of students/parents re: internet-capable computer access outside school
  • ways to increase computer access for identified students at school
  • more hours available in library before/after school
  • more transportation for students before/after school
  • work with community to provide programs for computers in homes (thin clients?)
  • increase hours, computers at public library and satellites
