I’ve been thinking a lot lately about our students’ access to computers / internet tools on an equal basis. Each year, this becomes more and more essential, as more teachers assign school work that requires computer / internet access. We don’t have any reliable statistics about how many students do not have internet-capable computers available outside school. My concern is that it may be higher than some off-the-cuff estimates have been.
Some possible ways to deal with this:
- survey of students/parents re: internet-capable computer access outside school
- ways to increase computer access for identified students at school
- more hours available in library before/after school
- more transportation for students before/after school
- work with community to provide programs for computers in homes (thin clients?)
- increase hours, computers at public library and satellites
